Restroom Trailer vs. Porta Potty for Your Wedding
Restroom trailer vs porta potty for a wedding comes down to budget, hookups at the venue and how dressed-up the evening is.
Choose a restroom trailer for a wedding when the venue has a garden hose and a 110-volt outlet within 100 feet and the budget allows a typical starting price of $1,095. Choose porta potties when there are no hookups or the budget is tight. Deluxe flushing units with sinks are the middle ground.

Is a restroom trailer or a porta potty better for a wedding?
A restroom trailer is better for a wedding when the venue has water and power and guests are dressed for an evening reception. Porta potties are better when the site has no hookups, space is tight or the budget is limited. Deluxe flushing units with sinks sit between the two on both comfort and cost.
| Factor | Standard porta potty | Deluxe flushing unit | 2-stall restroom trailer |
|---|---|---|---|
| Typical starting price | From $165 per unit | From $275 per unit | From $1,095 (1–3 days) |
| Comfort | Seat, urinal, hand sanitizer | Foot-pump flush and inside sink | Flush toilets, running sinks, mirrors, lights, climate control |
| Hookups | None | None | Garden hose and dedicated 110-volt, 20-amp outlet within 100 ft |
| Space | 43.5 in wide, 47 in deep | Same footprint as standard | Trailer length plus truck access, level ground |
| Setup | Set and leveled at delivery | Set and leveled at delivery | Parked, leveled and hooked up |
| Guest feel | Practical | Closer to a real bathroom | Feels like a building restroom |
| Booking lead time | Days | Days | 2–6 weeks, May–October |
How much do wedding restrooms cost by guest count?
Wedding restroom cost depends on guest count and hours. A 150-guest, 5-hour reception with alcohol needs 4 standard units under our event planning table: about $660 at typical starting prices. The same count in deluxe flushing units runs about $1,100. One 2-stall restroom trailer starts at $1,095 before tax.
The unit counts come from our event planning table, built from common portable-sanitation industry event charts. The table gives 3 standard units for 150 guests over 5–6 hours. We add 1 unit when alcohol is served and 1 more when more than half the guests are women.
| Guests | Standard units | Standard units cost | Deluxe units cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| 100 | 3 | From $495 | From $825 |
| 150 | 4 | From $660 | From $1,100 |
| 200 | 5 | From $825 | From $1,375 |
A trailer has two stalls, so on its own it has fewer toilets than four separate units. We size the trailer setup to your guest list on the quote. Bigger guest lists often pair one trailer with a few standard units. Run your own numbers in the porta potty calculator.
What does the venue need for a restroom trailer?
A venue needs three things for a restroom trailer: a standard garden-hose water connection, a dedicated 110-volt, 20-amp outlet within 100 feet, and level, firm ground the truck can reach. A generator and water tank can be arranged for an added charge when a farm or field has neither. Porta potties need no hookups at all.
Ask the venue where the outdoor spigot and outlet are before you book. A shared outlet that also runs the DJ or catering can trip a breaker mid-reception.
Barns, backyards and open fields often lack a dedicated circuit. That is where porta potties, deluxe units or a VIP cabin earn their place. Our restroom trailer rental page lists every requirement.

Can you mix a restroom trailer with porta potties?
A hybrid setup mixes unit types to balance comfort and cost. Common wedding hybrids are deluxe flushing units plus a handwashing station, a VIP luxury cabin for the wedding party with standard units for guests, or one restroom trailer backed by a few standard units for overflow. All of them go on one quote.
Deluxe units plus handwashing
Deluxe flushing units have a sink inside. Adding a free-standing handwashing station outside keeps the line moving, since guests can wash without waiting for a stall. A station has a typical starting price of $120 for an event.
VIP cabin for the wedding party
A VIP luxury cabin is a single walk-in unit with a porcelain-style flush toilet, a small sink, a mirror and an interior light. It needs no hookups. Typical starting price is $395 for an event, before tax. See the VIP luxury cabin page.
Trailer plus overflow units
Set the trailer near the tent and two standard units a little farther out. Guests choose, and the trailer line stays short during the toasts.
Do wedding restrooms need a wheelchair-accessible unit?
Wedding restrooms should include at least 1 wheelchair-accessible unit, because restroom trailers have steps and standard units have narrow doors. The 2010 ADA Standards §213.2 call for at least 5% of portable units in each cluster to be accessible, with a minimum of 1. Confirm current requirements with your venue or permit office.
Our wheelchair-accessible unit has a ground-level roll-in floor, a wide door and handrails. It is 62 inches wide and 62 inches long. Read the ADA Standards §213 for the rule text. This is not legal advice.
How do you decide between a trailer and porta potties?
Decide between a restroom trailer and porta potties with three questions. Does the venue have a hose and a dedicated outlet within 100 feet? Is the restroom budget above about $1,100? Is the reception formal and after dark? Three yes answers point to a trailer. Any no points to deluxe units or a hybrid.
Barn and backyard weddings with 100 guests or fewer often do well with deluxe flushing units and one handwashing station. Formal evening receptions at estates with power and water lean toward a trailer.
See every option on our wedding restroom rentals page, then send us the venue details.
Wedding restroom questions
Will guests in heels have trouble with restroom trailer steps?
Restroom trailers have a few steps up to the doors. Most guests in heels manage them fine on a level, lit spot. Guests who use a wheelchair or walker cannot use the steps, so a trailer order should include a wheelchair-accessible unit on the ground nearby.
Can the restroom trailer be hidden from wedding photos?
Place the trailer behind the tent, behind a hedge row or beside a barn, within 100 feet of the water and power hookups. Draping or pipe-and-drape from your rental company can screen it. Leave a clear, lit path so guests can find it after dark.
Do we need someone to watch the restrooms during the reception?
Small weddings rarely need a restroom attendant; units arrive cleaned and stocked. For large weddings, attendant service is available with restroom trailers to restock paper and keep sinks tidy through the night. Ask for it on the quote if your guest list is big.
How far ahead should we book a restroom trailer for a fall wedding?
Book a restroom trailer 2–6 weeks ahead from May through October, and earlier for popular Saturdays in September and October. Porta potties and deluxe units can usually be booked closer to the date. Event orders are paid at booking with no separate deposit.
What if it rains on the wedding day?
Rain does not stop trailers or porta potties, but it softens lawns. Choose a spot that drains well, and lay a walkway mat or plywood path if the ground is soft. A trailer needs level, firm ground, so a gravel drive or paved lot is the safest choice in a wet week.
