Porta potty calculator: how many porta potties do I need?
The porta potty calculator below uses our event planning table to answer how many porta potties you need. Enter the guest count and event length, then check the boxes for alcohol, a mostly female crowd and food. The answer shows standard units, wheelchair-accessible units and handwashing stations in whole numbers.
For events longer than 8 hours or spread over several days, call dispatch at (513) 270-1174. Those events need a service plan, not just a unit count.
How many porta potties per person at an event?
Our event planning table puts 1 standard porta potty with 50 guests for up to 4 hours, 2 units with 100 guests for 3–6 hours, and 4 units with 200 guests for 5–8 hours. Longer events need more units because the same guests return. Round guest counts up to the next row.
| Guests | 1–2 hrs | 3–4 hrs | 5–6 hrs | 7–8 hrs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 50 | 1 | 1 | 2 | 2 |
| 100 | 1 | 2 | 2 | 3 |
| 150 | 2 | 2 | 3 | 4 |
| 200 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 4 |
| 300 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 |
| 500 | 4 | 6 | 8 | 9 |
| 1,000 | 8 | 10 | 14 | 16 |

How do alcohol, guest mix and food change the porta potty count?
Alcohol adds 1 standard porta potty to the table count. A crowd where more than half the guests are women adds 1 more. Food adds handwashing stations, not toilets: 1 station per 2 to 3 standard units. Every event also gets at least 1 wheelchair-accessible unit on top of the standard count.
Example: 150-guest graduation party, 5 hours, beer served
The table gives 3 standard units for 150 guests over 5–6 hours. Beer adds 1, so the order is 4 standard units plus 1 wheelchair-accessible unit. Food is on the grill, so add 2 handwashing stations.
Example: 200-guest wedding, 6 hours, open bar
The table gives 4 units. The open bar adds 1, and a guest list that is more than half women adds 1 more, for 6 standard units. Add 1 wheelchair-accessible unit and 2 handwashing stations for the dinner. See wedding restroom rentals for flushing and trailer options.
Example: 60-guest backyard birthday, 3 hours, no alcohol
Sixty guests rounds up to the 100 row, which gives 2 standard units for 3–4 hours. Many hosts swap one standard for a deluxe flushing unit with a sink instead of adding a separate station.
How many porta potties does a construction site need?
A construction site with 20 or fewer workers needs at least 1 toilet under OSHA 29 CFR 1926.51 Table D-1. Larger crews need 1 toilet seat and 1 urinal per 40 workers, and crews of 200 or more need 1 of each per 50 workers. We recommend 1 standard unit per 10 workers with weekly service.
| Crew size | OSHA legal minimum | Our recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| 1–10 workers | 1 toilet | 1 standard unit |
| 11–20 workers | 1 toilet | 2 standard units |
| 21–40 workers | 1 toilet seat and 1 urinal per 40 workers | 3–4 standard units |
| 41–80 workers | 1 toilet seat and 1 urinal per 40 workers | 5–8 standard units |
| 81–199 workers | 1 toilet seat and 1 urinal per 40 workers | 1 per 10 workers |
| 200 or more workers | 1 toilet seat and 1 urinal per 50 workers | 1 per 10 workers, plus a second weekly service |
OSHA 1926.51(f) separately covers washing facilities on jobsites. Ask about handwashing stations with your quote. Read the full OSHA toilet requirements for construction guide or see construction site toilet rentals.
Legal minimums can change, and your general contractor or inspector may set a higher count. Confirm with your permit office. This page is not legal advice.
How many porta potties do farm workers need?
Farm field crews need 1 toilet and 1 handwashing facility for every 20 workers under OSHA 29 CFR 1928.110. Both must sit within a quarter-mile walk of where the crew is working. A 35-person harvest crew therefore needs at least 2 toilets and 2 handwashing stations near the field.
The full rule is at OSHA 29 CFR 1928.110. On large fields, split units into clusters so every crew stays inside the quarter-mile limit. Our seasonal porta potty rentals cover farm and orchard seasons.
How many wheelchair-accessible porta potties do I need?
At least 5% of the portable toilets in each cluster must be wheelchair-accessible, with a minimum of 1, under 2010 ADA Standards §213.2. A cluster of 1 to 20 units needs 1 accessible unit. A cluster of 21 to 40 units needs 2. Each accessible unit needs a 60-inch turning space inside.
The rule text is in the 2010 ADA Standards, section 213.2. The 5% counts per cluster, so a festival with three separate clusters needs at least 1 accessible unit in each one. Our wheelchair-accessible porta potty is 62 inches wide and needs a flat, firm path to the door.
Your permit office or venue makes the final call on accessibility. Confirm before you order; this page is not legal advice.
How many handwashing stations go with the porta potties?
Plan 1 handwashing station for every 2 to 3 standard porta potties when food is served. Our reference station, the PolyJohn Bravo, has two foot-pump sinks and holds 22 gallons of fresh water. The manufacturer rates it at nearly 350 uses before a refill, with no power needed.
| Standard units | Handwashing stations |
|---|---|
| 1–3 | 1 |
| 4–6 | 2 |
| 7–9 | 3 |
| 10–12 | 4 |
Handwashing stations can freeze below 32°F. In freezing weather, the hand sanitizer dispenser inside each unit is the backup. See handwashing station rental for sizes and service.
When should I add service visits instead of more porta potties?
Add service visits instead of more porta potties when the problem is a full tank, not a line. Multi-day festivals get daily or between-day service, and jobsites with more than 10 workers per unit get a second weekly service. Add more units when a big crowd arrives at once, like a reception break.
- Weekend events: units arrive cleaned and stocked and usually need no mid-event service.
- Multi-day festivals: daily or between-day service, quoted per visit. See festival porta potties.
- Big crews: twice-weekly service, quoted per visit, on top of the weekly service included in a 28-day rental.
Porta potty count questions
We're having 60 people for 3 hours. Is one porta potty enough?
Plan on 2 standard units for 60 people over 3 hours. Our event planning table shows 1 unit for up to 50 guests, so 60 guests moves to the next row, which is 2 units for 3–4 hours. Add 1 more if alcohol is served.
Would two porta potties be enough for 100 guests?
Two standard porta potties cover 100 guests for 3 to 6 hours. A shorter event of 1–2 hours needs only 1, and a 7–8 hour event needs 3. Add 1 unit if alcohol is served and 1 more if more than half the guests are women.
How many toilets does OSHA require for 30 workers?
OSHA Table D-1 requires 1 toilet seat and 1 urinal per 40 workers once a crew passes 20, so 30 workers need at least 1 of each. That is the legal minimum. Our recommendation for 30 workers on a 40-hour week is 3 standard units with weekly service.
Do I need a wheelchair-accessible porta potty at a private party?
We recommend at least 1 wheelchair-accessible unit at any event where a guest uses a wheelchair, walker or cane. The 5% rule in the 2010 ADA Standards applies to many public events and venues. Confirm what your event needs with your permit office or venue; this is not legal advice.
How many handwashing stations do I need if food is served?
Plan 1 handwashing station for every 2 to 3 standard porta potties when food is served. A party with 3 standard units needs 1 station, and a party with 6 needs 2. Deluxe flushing units already have a sink inside, so they need no extra station.
Is it better to add a unit or add a service visit?
Add a unit when lines form at one time, such as a reception break or crew lunch. Add a service visit when the tanks fill over several days, such as a multi-day festival or a big crew. A second weekly service often replaces a unit on a jobsite.
